Quinta do Quetzal is located in the heart of the Alentejo region on the slopes of Vidigueira. It is in the immediate vicinity of the oldest Roman winery in the southwest Iberian Peninsula. Somewhat different to the typical Alentejo estate, the local microclimate and our hills create ideal conditions for a unique terroir.
The schist soils, different sun exposures and altitudes created by the hilly topography and areas planted with old vines form a unique combination in the setting of the Alentejo plains.
While the Vidigueira region is hot and sunny, its location at the southern foot of the Serra do Mendro allows it to benefit from cool winds blowing across the mountains from the Atlantic Ocean. These conditions create large contrasts in daily temperatures, giving the grapes the heat they need to ripen and the coolness to recover. Their exceptional quality allows the production of wines which beautifully express the character of the surrounding region, albeit in limited quantities.
To complete the Quetzal experience, a new building housing a restaurant, a shop and an art centre has been built. The schist lining its walls is particularly notable and fluidly integrates the building within its surroundings.
The surrounding space has been designed to incorporate natural native plants to maximise the experience of the Alentejo's natural habitat.
