Sem Fim Restaurant
1 / 7

Up for an unforgettable meal in one of the best-known restaurants in the Monsaraz area, a space which used to be an old olive press?

The pressing room has been converted into a restaurant. The colours, the floors, the ceiling trusses, the presses, the machines, everything that remained after an abandonment of twenty years has been kept.

The Sem Fim was a spindle machine that transported the olives from the pits, where they were cleaned, to the mixer. Here they were ground up and the resulting paste was spread on the filters. They were pressed and on the other side the olive oil flowed into the large tanks of scalding water. The first one, the most virgin oil of all, was tasted straight away with a piece of bread toasted on the wire of one of the salamanders which once heated water and now fight off the winter chill. What was left over from this process went to the devil, with a little always “spilt” to take home.
