Quinta do Quetzal is located in the heart of the Alentejo region on the slopes of Vidigueira. It is in the immediate vicinity of the oldest Roman winery in the southwest Iberian Peninsula. Somewhat different to the typical Alentejo estate, the local microclimate and our hills create ideal conditions for a unique terroir.
The schist soils, different sun exposures and altitudes created by the hilly topography and areas planted with old vines form a unique combination in the setting of the Alentejo plains. While the Vidigueira region is hot and sunny, its location at the southern foot of the Serra do Mendro allows it to benefit from cool winds blowing across the mountains from the Atlantic Ocean.
These conditions create large contrasts in daily temperatures, giving the grapes the heat they need to ripen and the coolness to recover. Their exceptional quality allows the production of wines which beautifully express the character of the surrounding region, albeit in limited quantities.
To complete the Quetzal experience, a new building housing a restaurant, a shop and an art centre has been built. The schist lining its walls is particularly notable and fluidly integrates the building within its surroundings. The surrounding space has been designed to incorporate natural native plants to maximise the experience of the Alentejo's natural habitat.
Cees and Inge de Bruin are collectors and patrons of contemporary art. Together with their family, they have maintained a strong connection to Portugal for over 40 years. The Quinta do Quetzal project expresses their passion for Portuguese culture, nature, gastronomy and wines. They wish to share to share this passion! Every year, in collaboration with their daughter Aveline de Bruin, they organise a new exhibition on the estate, where the starting point is the family's private collection and its links to the world of art.
Our modern winery preserves ancient Roman and Alentejan traditions and techniques of wine production. The grapes are brought into the cellar by the natural action of gravity and processed into excellent wines in our cellars, which are located underground to create a naturally cool temperature in which the grapes can gradually age.
All Quinta do Quetzal wines are made exclusively from grapes grown on the estate, which has 49 hectares of vineyard, including around 1.5 hectares of old vines.
Our wines inherit the name of the project and the property that is its birthplace and do justice to their origins and uniqueness. Our wines are produced from grapes grown on the finest vineyards of Quinta do Quetzal, from the highest altitude vineyards. They are complex and elegant wines, the result of a careful selection of grape varieties and ageing in barrels. They express our artistic approach to life.
Dedicated to contemporary art, the Quetzal Art Centre is situated far from the bustling art world. Aimed at all audiences, the centre's programme is guided by a desire to give art a purpose and presence outside the traditional commercial circuits. Works by internationally acclaimed artists and emerging artists who, for whatever reason, have escaped public attention are exhibited, allowing them to develop a dialogue with a younger generation of artists. Art is capable of giving visibility to the invisible, of touching our senses and revealing the world from a different angle. The works on show at the Quetzal Art Centre express the essence of the contemporary and project an optimistic future.
Enjoy the relaxed and casual atmosphere of the Quetzal restaurant and taste the flavours inspired by Alentejan gastronomy. The key elements of the dishes are local, seasonal products with genuine flavour, always well accompanied by Quinta do Quetzal wines. In the restaurant, you can enjoy an impressive view of the property with the vegetable garden and vineyard a stone's throw away, but also a garden of native plants, aromatic herbs and flowers which we use in the preparation of the dishes.
