Reaches 96 m above the foundation and a length of 458 m crowning. The reservoir when filled to its maximum height reaches 250 km square, and is the largest artificial lake in Europe.

It was built in order to irrigate the Alentejo and electricity generation, and other complementary activities.

It is also an important leisure center where you can enjoy a variety of water sports, the black bass fishing or just boating.
